                                                  Summer Slam

The past few weeks we’ve gotten some much needed rain in our region. With temps soaring to 101 degrees fishing has been nothing more than uncomfortable. July’s afternoon rain forecast should put our Summer back into prospective.

Early morning, pre-dawn trips are a must for a productive day of fishing. Late afternoon and evenings are great too if you can dodge the rain. If fishing mid-day is more your thing, or all the time you have, try hiding from the suns scorching rays and fish deeper cuts of shady mangrove laden shorelines. Using a fresh cut-bait like mullet, ladyfish or pinfish soaked under a cork will work best during the hottest part of the day. Species like redfish and trout will be in these areas trying to get away from the heat.

This month’s kayaking hotspots are Miguels Bay and Joe’s Bay in the south shore area where snook, trout, redfish and an occasional pompano (yep they’re here), are common catches. Live pilchard rigged with a cork is a preferred method while soft plastics like SS Minnow, Boss and curly fries from Fish On lures will get you on your way to getting your slam.

Coffee Pot Bayou and Picnic Island are redfish and trout havens this time of the year while Christmas Pass, Cypress park beach and Rocky Point are all loaded with BIG snook. To better you chances with these gals, nothing beats a topwater plug in the a.m. or using the new Boss Lures rigged weedless with Edge hooks. Don’t forget that it’s catch and release only and be sure to handle them carefully. Catch info may be reported to the Snook Foundation to help keep accurate data on the snook population.

. Our #1 superstar, Tarpon, can be found lurking in very shallow water this month giving us “yakkers” numerous opportunities at sight fishing one of these primitive beasts. One thing I do stress is to be aware of large sharks. I have been spotting some HUGE ones in low water. This year we seem to have even bigger numbers than last year in shark population. Can BP be to blame? J so be on your P’s and Q’s and be safe, fish hard and don’t forget to let the kids tag along.
